A staggering 17.9% of traffic fines issued in Luxembourg over the last five years have gone unpaid, amounting to over €26.5 million lost to the government.
Every year, a significant number of fines issued in Luxembourg go unpaid, resulting in millions of euros that the state fails to recover.
In response to a parliamentary question from MP Mars Di Bartolomeo of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP), Minister for Home Affairs Léon Gloden and Minister of Justice Elisabeth Margue revealed that hundreds of thousands of unpaid fines remain outstanding.
In 2024 alone, nearly one in five fines issued during the year went unpaid. A total of 184,100 fines were issued but never settled, amounting to over €7.3 million lost to the Luxembourg state.
Over the past five years, 702,351 fines out of approximately 3.9 million issued have met the same fate, representing 17.9% of all fines. This equates to more than €26.5 million that has not been recovered by the government.
However, motorists who choose to ignore their fines should not think they are off the hook. In the last five years, more than 75,000 cases have been referred to the Luxembourg public prosecutor's office. Of these, while 21,600 cases have been closed without further action, over 32,000 have resulted in criminal court orders. These orders have led to additional fines totalling €7.4 million.
