Raised to 5,500Petitions to require more signatures and stricter submission rules

RTL Today
From 15 March, petitions in Luxembourg could face new requirements, including a higher signature threshold and stricter submission rules.

The changes, announced a year and a half ago, were confirmed on Wednesday by the responsible parliamentary committee. If approved by the Chamber plenary, the new provisions will take effect on 15 March.

In the future, a petition will thus require 5,500 signatures instead of 4,500 to qualify for a public debate in parliament. Committee chair and MP Françine Closener of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP) confirmed the decision to newspaper Tageblatt.

Additionally, submitting a petition will require authentication via a LuxTrust certificate. If a petition reaches 5,500 signatures, a debate must be organised within four months – a newly introduced deadline. The debate structure will also be more clearly defined.
