The Science and Education Union (SEW), part of the Independent Luxembourg Trade Union Confederation (OGBL), held a protest on Thursday to advocate for inclusion and equity in public schools.
The demonstration, organised under the “EduAction” initiative, coincided with International Education Day and emphasised the right of every child to access quality education.
Protesters criticised the current decision-making process in the education sector, arguing that policies are often implemented without consulting the teachers and staff who work directly with students. “Decisions made by authorities may look good on paper, but they often fail to address the realities of the classroom”, demonstrators stated. They also highlighted the severe understaffing in schools, stressing that educators should not be expected to bear excessive responsibilities without adequate support.
Among its demands, the SEW called for the establishment of an independent contact point for teachers facing humiliation or harassment, as well as the creation of staff delegations in public schools.
Union leader Joelle Damé emphasised the need to listen to those on the front lines of education. “We must recognise the value of a strong public school system and respect the teaching profession by giving teachers a voice”, she said. Damé added: “Our goal is to ensure every child can thrive in an inclusive school environment with access to quality education.”
