In 2026, the Cinémathèque will embark on a renovation and expansion project designed to enhance accessibility and accommodate growing audiences, all while preserving its iconic cinematic spirit.

Since its founding in 1977, the Cinémathèque in Luxembourg City has been dedicated to preserving and celebrating international film heritage. In recent years, it has also become a significant contributor to contemporary cinema.

In 2023, the historic institution–which doubles as a film museum–was honoured as a "treasure of European film culture" by the European Film Academy. Now, the Cinémathèque is preparing for a major renovation and expansion project, set to begin in early 2026.

The renovation aims to modernise the existing infrastructure, improving accessibility, and ensuring compliance with current standards while preserving the building's historical charm. A key addition will be a second screening room, designed to accommodate the growing number of visitors. Claude Bertemes, the Cinémathèque's director, has assured that the iconic atmosphere of the original screening room will remain intact, with updates focusing primarily on optimising technical installations.

Another new feature will be a catering area, enhancing the visitor experience. The renovation and expansion works are expected to continue until February 2029. Importantly, the Cinémathèque will remain operational throughout this period with films being screened at alternative locations in collaboration with partner venues.
