A nationwide and ongoing survey by Luxembourg's healthcare authorities reveals positive care experiences among breast cancer patients, while highlighting areas for improved communication and the importance of a holistic approach to health.
The Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) in collaboration with the Health Ministry in 2022 launched a joint survey to find out how well cancer patients are cared for in Luxembourg. The survey, which is part of the second national cancer action plan, saw 300 people fill out a questionnaire on diagnostics, treatment, admission, and their relationship with healthcare personnel.
The first results of the long-term study were published on Monday and show the testimonials of 100 women with an average age of 50, who either have breast cancer or have recovered from it. Results were positive overall, but patients also provided concrete proposals for improvement.
Respondents rated communication and support during the diagnostic procedures eight out of 10. 80% were satisfied with the information received from healthcare workers, though some argued that there was a lack of insight surrounding treatment side effects.
80% also reported seeing a psychologist after being diagnosed with cancer, while 30% consulted physiotherapists, and 20% completed sports lessons or visited a nutritionist.
At a first glance, the report therefore highlights the need to continue expanding the holistic approach to patient care.
Since the survey is still ongoing, the LIH and Ministry have issued a new call for cancer patients to participate and help make systematic improvements. The survey, also available in English, can be accessed here.
