Loïc Tanson's Luxembourgish western 'The Last Ashes' was the talk of the town last year, and tonight you can see what the fuss was all about. The film will be shown at 8pm on RTL, and will be available later on RTL Play - with English subtitles. Enjoy!

1838: For centuries, Luxembourg has been under the rule of foreign powers, enduring cycles of hunger and disease that have decimated the population.

In an impoverished northern region, the Graff family, led by their patriarch, holds dominion over a small, isolated village. It is thanks to them that the citizens have survived the constant misfortune that have befallen them. To ensure their future, they have established strict, pious and oppressive rules that must be strictly followed.

However, 12-year-old Helene rebels against the established order and, with the help of Jon, the youngest son of the Graff family, tries to flee. Yet, their bid for freedom ends in tragedy.

The Graffs enact revenge by killing Helene's family in front of her eyes, and Jon is tortured. Helene's fate is no less gruesome, as she is left to die, bound to a tree in the wilderness.

15 years later, Luxembourg is finally an independent state, and the land is slowly changing as the railway brings new possibilities. However, the Graff family dominion over the village is undisputed, despite the advanced age and frail health of the patriarch.

When villagers discover a stranger, Oona, near the body of the Graff family's right-hand man, they decide to take her into the village.
