Right in time for end-of-year celebrations, the Ministry of Health raises awareness to the dangers of alcohol by launching a campaign.

The ministry believes one should rethink their relationship to alcohol, as well as the space it occupies, in daily life and during the holidays.

That's why they launched a new initiative called "Zero alcohol. 100% yourself!". The press release (which can be read below in French) asserts that this campaign is meant to educate people and "denormalise" consumption of alcohol.

The campaign states that the norm should be to choose not to drink. The Ministry of Health and Social Security want to inspire people to question their relationship to alcohol and the role it plays in social situations. It is crucial not to succumb to peer pressure and to respect those who do not feel like drinking.

In Europe, alcohol is responsible for one out of 11 deaths. In Luxembourg, one person dies because of alcoholism every 30 hours. 60 illnesses could be prevented by abstaining from alcohol, amongst those are a couple of cancers.

Luxembourg is one of the countries in Europe with the highest numbers of alcohol consumption, according to Eurostat. More than one third of the population drinks excessively once a month. 43% of people aged over 15 drink alcohol every week, and almost 9% every day.
