The group Energies Mobilité and the association of petrol station owners have criticised the recent reform of commercial opening hours, expressing their concerns to the council of ministers this week.
They argue that the changes could harm competition within Luxembourg's economy and advocate for allowing businesses to set their own opening hours.
Under the new regulations, petrol stations are required to close by 10pm on weekdays and 7pm on weekends—restrictions that, according to the group, neither align with customer habits nor reflect current market demands.
Petrol station operators are particularly troubled by the requirement to negotiate exemptions through collective agreements, a process they believe contradicts the government’s commitment to simplifying administrative procedures. They also point out that most petrol stations lack staff delegations, making this approach unworkable for the sector.
Energies Mobilité insists that greater flexibility is needed to meet consumer needs and maintain competitiveness in the market.
