The former coach of the Luxembourg women's national football team, Romain Jean, has died following a heart attack during Wednesday's Bayern Munich vs. Benfica match at Allianz Arena.

A spectator who required emergency medical treatment during Wednesday evening's Bayern Munich vs. Benfica match at Allianz Arena has been identified as Romain Jean, the former coach of the Luxembourg women's national football team. Jean passed away on his way to the hospital after suffering a heart attack.

The incident occurred early in the first half of the Champions League match on 6 November 2024, when an emergency medical operation was launched in the southeast section of the stadium. The spectator, later identified as Jean, was initially resuscitated multiple times by first-aiders before being transported to the hospital under intensive care, according to Bayern Munich, who shared details with the German news agency SID.

An hour after the final whistle, Bayern Munich confirmed in a statement that Jean had died en route to the hospital. "FC Bayern is in mourning side by side with the fan’s relatives," the statement read, which was also shared on the club's social media platforms. Jean, who served as the first coach of the Luxembourg women's national football team from 2006 to 2012, was a well-known figure in the Luxembourg football community.

Bayern Munich's head coach, Vincent Kompany, expressed his condolences after the match: "We didn't celebrate much after the game." He noted that the players only learned of Jean's death after the match, while returning to the dressing room.

In a sign of respect, Bayern Munich fans in the Südkurve, where the club's ultras gather, refrained from chanting during the match. Flags were also removed from the stands, and the stadium observed a solemn silence, with only the chants of Benfica supporters filling the air in the 75,000-seat arena.
