The council had voted at the end of September, via a secret ballot, to exit the proposed merger, which aims to unify Bettendorf, Diekirch, Erpeldange-sur-Sûre, Ettelbruck, and Schieren into a single municipality. The outcome of the vote effectively halted negotiations for the merger.

However, Minister Gloden stated that the secret ballot used by the council was not in accordance with legal requirements. As a result, the Bettendorf municipal council will need to hold another vote, this time publicly.
