A new traffic sign designed to improve cyclist safety will soon be introduced on Luxembourg's roads.

According to the Ministry of Mobility, the sign will remind motorists to maintain a minimum distance of 1.5 metres when overtaking cyclists.

These signs will be installed primarily on roads that are part of the national cycling network and will be placed outside urban areas.

Since May 2018, Luxembourg's Highway Code has required motorists to maintain a minimum lateral distance when overtaking cyclists, similar to regulations in neighbouring countries. This minimum distance of 1.5 metres is enforced across the entire road network, both within and outside built-up areas, to prevent accidents and enhance the safety of all road users. If motorists are unable to maintain this distance, they are advised to refrain from overtaking.

The initiative comes in response to a request from ProVelo, an association advocating for greater safety for cyclists.
