Two teenagers were arrested on Saturday night for breaking and entering, as well as theft, and were initially assigned to a youth detention facility, which had no room – resulting in their provisional placement in prison.

The teenagers, who were known to police for past transgressions, were taken into custody on the night of 17 August on suspicion of breaking and entering. The suspects claimed they were 12 and 13 years old when questioned, but were later confirmed to be 16 and 17 respectively.

The young offenders were meant to be placed in provisional custody at the Unisec socio-educational centre for young people in Dreiborn, but the facility had no space. Furthermore, the previous multiple arrests for similar offences had not prevented the young suspects from reoffending. As a result, the public prosecutor's office decided to temporarily place the two individuals in Luxembourg's penitentiary centre in Schrassig.

A judicial inquiry will take place and a magistrate in a juvenile court was requested to take the case.
