The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC) reported a "slight" increase in Luxembourg's unemployment rate on Tuesday. However, the number of jobseekers has risen sharply over the past year, with an 11.1% increase.

Currently, Luxembourg has 17,901 jobseekers, according to figures released by the National Employment Agency (ADEM) on Tuesday. This represents a significant rise compared to the same period last year.

ADEM confirms that the number of jobseekers has grown by 1,790 people (+11.1%) year-on-year. The increase affects all job vacancy durations, with those aged between 30 and 44 being the most impacted.

The sectors most affected include construction, maintenance, installation, logistics, and industry. Additionally, there has been an uptick in jobseekers within accounting, IT, and banking sectors.

Simultaneously, the number of available jobs has seen a sharp decline. ADEM estimates a 20.8% drop in vacancies compared to July 2023. As of the latest count, there are 7,539 job openings in the country—1,974 fewer than this time last year.

Despite these figures, STATEC maintains that the unemployment rate has only slightly increased, now standing at 5.8%. The number of people receiving full unemployment benefits has also risen, with 11,190 beneficiaries—an increase of 1,900 compared to July 2023.
