Luxembourg reported a recent case of bed bugs this year. However, identifying these elusive parasites is challenging, and there is no requirement to report infestations, making it difficult to predict how the situation might evolve.
Bed bugs can sometimes be brought back from vacations, hidden in luggage or clothing. Eliminating bed bugs can be difficult, as some have developed resistance to insecticides.
In neighboring countries like Germany and France, bed bugs are becoming a significant issue. In France, it is estimated that one in ten households is affected, with damages amounting to 300 million euros annually. The infestation is causing serious concern in the hotel, hostel, and youth accommodation sectors.
In Luxembourg, the issue of bed bugs is not officially recognised as widespread, but the Ministry of Health is keeping a close eye on the situation.
Health Minister Martine Deprez and Environment Minister Serge Wilmes confirmed this in response to a parliamentary question from DP deputies André Bauler and Luc Emering.
Hospitals in Luxembourg have also reported no problems with bed bugs so far, according to information provided to the ministry. Nevertheless, preventive measures are in place.
