The government has green-lit the resumption of funding for individual charitable entities linked to Caritas, following a meeting of top ministers to address the ongoing scandal of embezzlement within the organisation.

The Ministry of State issued a statement on Tuesday evening to announce the outcome of a meeting on the ongoing Caritas scandal, with individual charitable entities being green-lit to receive funds once again. Six different ministers attended the meeting, including Prime Minister Luc Frieden, Xavier Bettel, Claude Meisch, Max Hahn, Gilles Roth, and Martine Deprez.

The ministers were presented with a report from the follow-up committee, set up on 6 August in response to reports of embezzlement at Caritas, and discussed several additional points to be worked out prior to a meeting with Caritas representatives. They concluded that funds could once again be transferred to different charitable entities associated with Caritas, provided various conditions were met – such as not being affected by the diversion of funds and not having filed applications for credit lines.

Work on the case is likely to take place at a government level throughout August, as well as by the follow-up committee, which consists of high-ranking officials, to ensure Caritas can once again resume the activities required of them by the State from September onwards.

In the statement, the ministers said it is vital to ensure this work can take place in order to continue supporting the most vulnerable in the country.
