Luxair has clarified that a video suggesting one of its planes caught fire is misleading. The incident, caused by a malfunctioning power generator in Crete, only involved steam, not flames.

A video circulating on social media, titled to suggest that a Luxair 737 plane caught fire, has led to some confusion. The footage shows an aircraft taking off from an airport, with a visible white smoke cloud, but does not identify the plane as a Luxair flight. The Luxembourgish company clarified that while one of their aircraft was involved in the incident, it did not catch fire and the aircraft itself was unaffected.

The event took place on 4 August 2024, in Crete, Heraklion. A malfunction with the airport's power generator, which was supplying electricity to the Luxair aircraft during a layover, caused the generator to produce a large amount of steam. This steam was directed towards the plane, prompting the pilot and crew to interrupt boarding and evacuate the passengers as a precaution, explains Luxair.

The passengers were then transported back to the terminal, while the crew worked to clear the steam. Once the situation was under control, boarding resumed and the plane was able to depart with only a slight delay.
