The adoption of a digital scanning process has allowed CMFEP to accelerate medical bill reimbursements, reducing the processing time for domestic claims to approximately one week, compared to CNS' six weeks.

In July, CNS explained that processing reimbursements for medical bills can take a few weeks. RTL investigated the speed of reimbursements by CMFEP, the health insurance for state employees, and found it to be significantly faster.

For doctor visits within Luxembourg, CMFEP reimburses insured individuals within seven to ten days. International medical bills typically take four to six weeks to be reimbursed, though this can extend to ten weeks when a rate inquiry is necessary.

In 2023, the national health insurance fund processed approximately 19,000 bills daily, while the state employees’ health insurance handled about 3,100 bills per day. On average, a CMFEP worker processes 300 medical invoices each day."

CMFEP is more efficient

Two years ago, a new work procedure was introduced at the health insurance company for state employees, specifically a new scanning process. According to the Ministry for Social Security, "the work procedures have been transformed completely, resulting in a more efficient workflow within CMFEP compared to three years ago." This improvement enabled the scanning and digital processing of bills.

The digital procedure has reduced waiting periods for reimbursements, particularly for domestic invoices. However, international invoices, which cannot yet be scanned and processed digitally, continue to experience delays.
