After a good first quarter, retail business owners are relieved, but the second quarter was almost as bad as the weather, they say.

"Luxembourg City is attractive, and the City's offerings are undeniable, from affordable products to luxury items," says Laurent Dufraisse, the director of a shopping centre near Hamilius. He welcomes the fact that almost all the retail spaces in the surrounding area have been rented out. New leases are also being signed in nearby streets.

Whether or not a retail sector is doing well depends on the industry, according to the Luxembourg City Business Association. Currently, the fashion sector is facing some strain. Director Anne Darin emphasises that some closures were due to international bankruptcies, despite the affected stores doing well in the City.

The main point of contention for business owners is the high rents. However, some landlords were open to renegotiating rents, explains Anne Darin.

Luxembourg City seeking contact with property owners

On the Avenue de la Gare, a quarter of retail spaces unfortunately stand empty, but the municipality is actively seeking contact with property owners to figure out a solution. The first alderman of the City, Maurice Bauer explains: "The fact of the matter is that we have a number of premises that are probably too expensive, and therefore, no one's willing to move in."

Improvements felt in Gare District

The situation in the Gare has improved over the last two months, explains Steve Quaring, owner of an eye wear store on Rue Jean Origer. "There are also fewer homeless people at the moment and the Gare looks cleaner as well."

The effect of increased security measures at the Gare is noticeable, confirms Malvina Gelezuinas who works at a shoe store on Avenue de la Gare, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2030. "We believe in the Gare district."

Her loyal customers include local residents, and an increased flow of people around the Gare district boosts business. She welcomes the concerts organised by the City of Luxembourg on Thursday evenings, which enliven the area. Additionally, she believes the upcoming opening of Hotel Alfa at the end of the year will bring fresh energy to the Gare district.
