Following an incident in 2019 that led to its closure, the Vianden swimming pool has now partially reopened.
While no injuries occurred, concerns over compliance prompted its closure, explained Pol Petry, a member of the Vianden municipal executive board (Schäfferot).
The decision to close the pool five years ago, instead of renovating it, was based on a report by the Inspectorate of Labour and Mines (ITM), highlighting its outdated infrastructure after 50 years of operation.
From July, part of the Vianden pool will be accessible again, offering visitors views of the iconic Vianden castle. Our colleagues from RTL Télé visited a week before the reopening to observe the ongoing renovations and which areas of the pool are currently available.
Renovations are ongoing, with Jos Coremans from the technical service of the Vianden municipality overseeing the project. He highlighted significant changes, including relocating the pool's technical operations from an outdated cellar to a new above-ground building completed in just three months. The building is equipped with solar panels to supplement warm water additions to the pool.
Currently, only the main recreational pool is open, catering primarily to leisure swimmers. Plans are in place to complete the rest of the site by next year, including facilities for lap swimming and athletic use.
Due to current restrictions, only 500 visitors are permitted on-site simultaneously. Prospective visitors are advised to book online in advance to secure their spot or be prepared to wait until space becomes available on-site.
The official reopening ceremony attended by a number of guests is scheduled for Friday, 12 July.
