The number of complaints related to child abuse has shown a steady increase over the past four years, according to recent statistics.
In this period, the public prosecutor's office received 220 complaints specifically for child rape.
Additionally, there were approximately 400 complaints for offences such as sexual misconduct ('molestation'). Another significant category is physical abuse ('blows and injuries'), with 1,860 complaints registered and processed.
Furthermore, there were 60 cases of alleged rape that did not result in formal complaints. It's noted that some cases may have been initially reported before 2019 and subsequently classified.
Currently, the Service Central d'Assistance Sociale (SCAS), responsible for juvenile protection within the judiciary, comprises 138 personnel across five sections, including guardianship and family affairs. Minister of Justice Elisabeth Margue highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at reorganising and staffing SCAS under juvenile protection and penal laws.
These statistics and reforms were disclosed in response to a parliamentary question posed by Pirate MPs Ben Polidori and Sven Clement.
