During a visit to Luxembourg on Tuesday, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that they are close to agreeing on the replacement of top leadership positions in the EU.

The European People's Party, European Social Democrats, and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats in Europe are nearing a consensus on the new appointments.

"Most likely, Ursula von der Leyen, Antonio Costa, and Kaja Kallas will get the top posts. And I'm pretty sure that the heads of state and government will make the formal and final decision next week," Tusk stated.

The formal decision is expected to be made at the upcoming EU summit in Brussels. During an informal meeting yesterday, heads of state and government did not reach a final agreement on the distribution of positions.

One point of contention is Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic's desire to hold the EU Council presidency for half a term, a position slated for Social Democrat Antonio Costa from Portugal.

Tusk was on a working visit to Luxembourg and met with Prime Minister Luc Frieden.
