Nearly 300 fines were issued last week by Luxembourg police during the special operation "Eyes on the Road."

The operation took place from 13 to 18 May, aiming to crack down on distracted driving. On Wednesday, police reported issuing 288 fines of €250 each, along with a penalty of 4 points, for using mobile phones while driving. Additionally, 200 fines were issued following checks of vehicle documents.

During these checks, 27 drivers were unable to produce their licences. Eleven drivers did not have their registration certificates, 29 lacked valid insurance, and 48 did not have a tax sticker. In 67 cases, drivers were unable to produce a valid roadworthiness certificate.

This road safety campaign highlighted distracted driving as "one of the primary causes of road accidents," according to the police. The Luxembourg highway code imposes a €250 fine and the loss of 4 points for mobile phone use at the wheel. Police noted that smartphones divert a driver's attention in multiple ways: visually, audibly, physically, and cognitively. They added that other distractions include lighting cigarettes, manipulating on-board instruments or navigation systems, and even conversations using a hands-free kit.
