Saturday evening saw the 17th edition of the ING Night Marathon in Luxembourg City, as runners and supporters turned out in their thousands in the setting sun.

The marathon covered 42.195 kilometres, winding its way through various neighbourhoods of Luxembourg City, including Kirchberg, Limpertsberg, Belair, Merl, Hollerich, Gare, and the city centre. Approximately 13,000 participants were expected to join the race.

Kenyan runner and favourite going into the race Richard Ruto Marakwen won the marathon in 2 hours, 23 minutes and four seconds, passing the finish line almost 10 minutes faster than second-placed Leendert Van Der Lugt (+10:25).

Luxembourg's Luc Scheller came third in 2:36:28, improving on his time from last year's race.

In the women's race, Kenya's Irine Jeruto (2:43:49) achieved first place, followed by Pia von Kreutz from Germany, while Karin Schank of Luxembourg was third with a time of 3:12:18.

As for the half-marathon, Luxembourg's Jenny Gloden came first, completing her race in 1 hour, 23 minutes and 44 seconds. She was joined on the podium by fellow Luxembourger Anne Reiser (+3:04) and Camille Bucciarelli of France (+3:07).

Belgium's Michiel Van Der Bauwhede achieved first place in the men's half marathon, joined by Americans Quinn Ballbach and Charles Van Hess. Eric Gonderinger finished first of the Luxembourgers in fifth place.
