The liberal democrats on Friday presented their six candidates and programme one day before the official launch of the national EU election campaign.

Among the candidates is something for everyone, explained the lead candidates of the Democratic Party (DP) at the press briefing. The leading duo of Amela Skenderović, a 28-year-old teacher from Esch-sur-Alzette, and 72-year-old MEP Charles Goerens, who is entering his tenth European elections, seem to complement each other well.

In addition, great importance was attached to the rest of the list, explained Skenderović. "It is a very diverse team that represents different age groups, professions, backgrounds – both culturally and ethnically. And it's a pleasure for me to be able to work with this team."

According to Georens, the numerous crises of recent years have shown that Europe needs to improve internal organisation – especially if other countries want to join the EU.

It would be absurd if the ten candidate countries were suddenly ready, but the EU was not, he added: "What the EU needs to do is change the way it works. We need leadership in foreign policy. We need leadership in defence policy, especially if Trump were to win the elections and leave us alone in NATO. We also need leadership when it comes to our position on international trade."

The DP presents itself as a pro-European party that wants to solve internal problems and improve future opportunities.

And it is precisely these opportunities that Skenderović associates with Europe: "My parents moved here because of a war. And I had the great opportunity to grow up in a free and strong Europe. I was able to study in different places. I was able to learn all kinds of languages. I was able to travel back and forth. And that is only possible if we continue to work for a strong and free Europe."
