Rumours have abounded for months, but now it’s official - Uber is coming to Luxembourg!
The platform, which allows users to book taxi services for all manner of trips, is currently available in 70 countries around the globe, and in six weeks’ time, it will launch in the Grand Duchy.
However, the Luxembourg launch will see a marked difference to the way the service operates elsewhere, as private individuals will not be able to provide the service. Instead, Uber in Luxembourg will only accept professional taxi drivers holding the appropriate licence.
The service will launch in partnership with Webtaxi, a Luxembourgish taxi service which launched in 2012. Webtaxi will remain in place, but passengers will now be able to choose whether to book a driver via Uber or via Webtaxi.
In a press release issued this week, Webtaxi said Uber’s 150-million-strong database would help connect their services to more customers, offering further options to international and local passengers.
As for the burning question for most customers - that of cost - there remains no clear answer. In an interview with RTL, director Laurent Slits could not confirm whether Uber would challenge other taxi services on price, as these are to be determined in the coming weeks.
