Last year, a quarter of households with children in Luxembourg struggled to make ends meet, according to a new report by Statec.
The national statistics office said that 26% of family households experienced financial difficulty in 2023. 22.4% of all households struggled financially last year - roughly 2 percentage points more than in 2022.
Among the most affected demographics were renters, single parents, or people with Portuguese nationality, Statec added, while young people under 25 were also more likely to struggle with money. Nearly three in ten people aged 16-25 said they had trouble making ends meet in 2023.
Expenses such as taking a week's holiday abroad were out of the question for 37% of households experiencing financial hardship.
However, despite the increase in difficulties, Luxembourg's situation remained better than other EU member states. In 2022, the Grand Duchy had the lowest proportion of households finding it very difficult to make ends meet, at 1.5%, ahead of the Netherlands and Finland at 1.9% and 2% respectively. The highest proportions were found in Bulgaria (14%), Montenegro (22.7%) and Greece (36.8%).
