On Saturday at 7pm, the starting gun shot signalled the start of the relay race. Organised by Luxembourg's Fondation Cancer, the event raises money for cancer research.
Beginning in 2006, participants of the 'Relay for Life' (Relais pour la Vie) run or walk in a 24-hour relay race. The event aims to bring hope in cancer patients' lives and to commemorate the people who lost their lives to cancer. Grand Duchess Maria Teresa is the honorary president of the charity and attends the event every year. This year was no exception.
Around 300 teams signed up for this year's edition of the race.
On Sunday, the event takes an emotional turn as candles are lit at 5pm in remembrance of the victims of cancer. Cancer survivors also get a chance to share their experiences.

Cancer in Luxembourg
Cancerous tumours are a leading cause of death in Luxembourg: In 2022, nearly 1100 people died of cancer. According to the Minister for Health Martine Deprez, lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related death in men with 109 deaths in 2022. Prostate cancer was the second most common cause with 47 deaths.
For women, the most common form of the disease is breast cancer with 105 deaths in 2022. The second most common cause is lung cancer with 81 deaths in the same year.
