Alcohol consumption continues to be a significant factor leading to the immediate withdrawal of driving licences in Luxembourg.
This was revealed in a response from Minister for Mobility Yuriko Backes and Minister of Justice Elisabeth Margue to a parliamentary question by Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) MPs Francine Closener and Yves Cruchten.
The data indicates that the majority of cases resulting in immediate licence withdrawal involved drivers under the influence of alcohol. In 2023, 1,496 individuals had their licences revoked on the spot due to elevated blood alcohol levels. This figure mirrors statistics from 2022 and 2019. During the pandemic, there were fewer drivers on the roads overall. Additionally, 229 individuals faced immediate licence revocation for speeding violations in 2023.
Nearly 4,000 driving licences were revoked in 2023 based on court rulings, with 956 cases resulting in provisional driving bans ordered by examining magistrates.
Administrative reasons also led to licence revocations for approximately 1,100 individuals in 2023. These reasons encompassed various factors such as medical conditions, traffic violations, and the accumulation of the maximum allowable demerit points.
