As Luxembourg strengthens penalties for drivers using mobile phones while driving, the government has revealed the monthly count of recorded offences.
In Luxembourg, an alarming number of people are caught and sanctioned every month for using their phones while driving.
In November 2023, a new law came into effect, increasing penalties for drivers caught using their mobile phones while driving.
The updated sanctions include a €250 warning (previously €145) and the deduction of four points from the driving licence (against two previously).
Specifically, the Highway Code in Luxembourg prohibits the use of "any device that interferes with the proper perception of traffic noise." Furthermore, a phone must be "securely fixed" within the vehicle, and drivers are prohibited from "using a device with a lit screen that is not integrated into the vehicle."
In response to a parliamentary question from Mars di Bartolomeo and Dan Biancalana (LSAP), the government confirmed that, since the new law came into force, police have not increased their checks. However, numerous drivers have still been caught red-handed.
Here is an exact number of warnings issued every month:
- September 2023: 367
- October 2023: 350
- November 2023: 280
- December 2023: 279
- January 2024: 412
Between February 1 and 9, an additional 95 offenses were also recorded.
