According to MeteoLux, the Grand Duchy will be buffeted by winds of up to 110 km/h on Thursday night, accompanied by heavy rain and flooding along the Alzette river.
The alert was put in place at 2pm, with areas around Hesperange and Pfaffenthal likely to be worst affected. Mersch and Ettelbruck may also experience flooding.
Car parks closed in Luxembourg City, Ettelbruck
Municipal authorities in the capital signalled intentions to close car parks on Rue Plaetis in the Grund, as well as on Rue d'Eich, as these areas are prone to flooding. Motorists who have parked their vehicles in these car parks are advised to move them as soon as possible. Luxembourg City council has launched a Liveticker to keep residents updated on the situation as it develops.
The municipality of Ettelbruck issued a notice confirming the closure of the Däich car park from 5pm on Thursday. Motorists were advised to remove their vehicles as soon as possible and told not to leave cars there overnight.
Nommern's "Centre des Promesses" said it would cancel a cancer awareness conference which was due to take place on Thursday evening in Cruchten. The event will be postponed to 4 March.
MeteoLux also issued a warning of strong winds, with gusts of up to 90 km/h expected until 6pm on Thursday. An orange alert has been put in place between 6pm and 11pm for the entire country, with winds likely to reach up to 110 km/h.
Heavy rain on Wednesday evening has caused water levels in south-eastern Luxembourg to rise. Further rainfall on Thursday is likely to reach 20-25 litres per square metre in western and southwestern Luxembourg, with 15-20 litres in other regions.
The orange alert for heavy rainfall will last until midnight on Thursday for southern Luxembourg. Northern Luxembourg has been placed under yellow alert for the same time period.
