Ermesinde agreementLuxembourg-Belgium military alliance deepens with joint battalion

Luxembourg and Belgium have taken a significant stride towards strengthening their military cooperation, paving the way for the establishment of a joint battalion comprising 700 soldiers.

Luxembourg’s Defence Minister Yuriko Backes and her Belgian counterpart, Ludivine Dedoner, on Tuesday signed the so-called ‘Ermesinde’ agreement, a technical document designed to regulate the governance of the future battalion.

The battalion will include 700 soldiers, with equal numbers from both countries, and be ready by 2030. It is expected to be stationed in Arlon, but further bases, for instance for conducting vehicle maintenance, will then be set up in the Grand Duchy at some later point.

Coinciding with the signing of the agreement was the arrival of the latest A400 M military plane. The Belgian-Luxembourgish fleet now features eight A400 M models.
