Highlighting that Luxembourg has the option to add names to the list of individuals permitted to leave Gaza via the Egyptian border point at Rafah, the collective emphasised the urgency of the situation.
Living in dire conditions within refugee camps and makeshift tents, Gazans lack access to clean water, sufficient food, and essential medical supplies. In response, the Watermelon collective is advocating for the government to issue temporary residence permits to family members of Luxembourg residents and ensure their safety.
Why does the collective call itself Watermelon?
In recent months, flags, T-shirts, posters, and social media posts featuring watermelons have become increasingly widespread. The fruit, reminiscent of the Palestinian flag with its red flesh, green skin, and black seeds, symbolises solidarity with Palestine and has been prominent since the beginning of the current conflict between Israel and Hamas.
