After a decade in opposition, the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) has reclaimed its position in government, with Prime Minister Luc Frieden leading the charge.

The New Year's reception in Niederanven saw an atmosphere of celebration, with CSV members warmly applauding Prime Minister Frieden's speech, where he openly acknowledged needing time to "get used to the term 'Prime Minister.'"

Reflecting on the successful election year of 2023, the CSV executive highlighted their return to government and stressed the importance of now translating their electoral promises into tangible actions. In an interview with our colleagues from RTL.lu, Christophe Hansen, Secretary General of the CSV, expressed his anticipation for this moment of assuming government responsibility, emphasising that effective policy shaping is most impactful with a majority in parliament.

Contrasting the previous year's New Year's reception, Prime Minister Frieden noted significant changes since then, highlighting, "It's the first time in years that the CSV has provided the head of government, the president of the Chamber of Deputies, and that we are back in the majority."

Addressing key policy priorities, Hansen emphasised the CSV's commitment to bolstering purchasing power through adjustments to the tax table. "The purchasing power of each individual is important," Hansen stated, noting the financial challenges faced by citizens. He highlighted the difficulties in managing home loans amid current interest rates, prompting the CSV to take "immediate action" to address purchasing power concerns.

Hansen hinted at forthcoming initiatives in housing and acknowledged the importance of environmental and climate protection, stressing the need to engage the public in these efforts. Hansen admitted that the begging ban is "a contentious issue," but argued that it was about giving the police "the necessary means."

Looking ahead, Hansen underscored the significance of the upcoming European elections as a crucial political event this year.
