As the police continues its annual road safety campaign, motorists should ensure that their vehicles are in shape to face wintery conditions while proper visibility is a key precaution for pedestrians and cyclists.

The 'Winter Time 2023' road safety campaign of the Grand Ducal Police is underway, which means officers will conduct routine vehicle checks focusing on visibility and roadworthiness until spring.

These two aspects play a vital role, particularly in this dark season of consistent fog, rain, and colder temperatures. Poor visibility is a major factor in accidents, so drivers and other road users alike should be extra vigilant over the coming months.

End of the prevention phase

In practice, the campaign involves nationwide checks from 16 October to the end of December, with a preventive phase focused on proper vehicle lighting from 16 October to 19 November.

For the duration of this prevention phase, motorists will not be automatically fined in case of issues. However, as the period ended over the weekend, drivers are now liable to be fined.

Police advice

In terms of general road safety, it is essential for drivers to be vigilant and to ensure they can see what is going on around them, in particular by checking that the lights are working and that the vehicle windows are clear.

As a pedestrian, runner, or cyclist, it is equally important to be visible to other road users, even from a distance.

Vehicles must be in perfect technical condition. Depending on the weather, tyres must be adjusted. Keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front, adapting the driving style to the weather conditions, and complying with speed limits are also essential.
