Representatives from Luxembourg’s Jewish community gathered at Place Clairefontaine in the capital on Wednesday evening to raise awareness of the hostages’ plight, calling upon the international community to put pressure on Hamas to ensure their safe return.

Albert Aflalo, president of the Israelite Consistory of Luxembourg, said the hostages taken on 7 October were not being spoken about enough.

“We aren’t receiving updates from the Red Cross. Currently, just the Israeli army is trying to recover the hostages. I know there are various negotiations going on at an international level, but it’s important for us, the Jewish community, to draw attention to the fact the hostages are still there and there has been no progress for a month.”

The Jewish community wanted to give a face to each missing hostage, so chose to put up posters depicting each kidnapped individual at Place Clairefontaine. The signs show the hostages’ names, photographs and a brief description. Aflalo said all civilians, children and babies needed to be freed, and called for the international community to exert pressure on Hamas to do so.

The assembled demonstrators underlined that the radical Islamic organisation should not be allowed to get away with their acts of terrorism.

Wednesday night also saw a minute’s silence dedicated to the 1,400 victims of the attack on 7 October.
