Organisers of the international scouts’ meeting, which has about 43,000 people from 158 countries in attendance, are currently struggling with extremely high temperatures and are weighing whether to cut short an event also reportedly plagued by dire campsite conditions. As British and American scouts have already pulled out of the event, there have been calls for alternative options.
Jamboree organisers decided to carry on as planned and ensured that they would do everything in their power to manage the situation. The South Korean government has since pledged support to the event and sent people to the scene.
Numerous people already had to pull out due to health reasons. While British scouts have opted to take their 4,000 members to a hotel, the US scouts have found shelter in a nearby military base.
In a message to parents, Luxembourg scouts’ officials have noted that the close to 180 youths from the Grand Duchy, all aged 14 to 17, are doing well under the circumstances. They further state that the departure of the Brits and Americans, both large groups, has already improved the spatial situation. Furthermore, the presence of government officials is said to have increased the safety feeling.
The camp is scheduled to conclude on 12 August.
