In response to the current weather conditions, the Ministry of the Environment and the Water Management Authority issued a call on Wednesday urging residents to reduce their water consumption and avoid unnecessary wastage.

Despite a relatively high amount of rainfall during the spring, groundwater replenishment during the winter months declined by 30% compared to the previous period.

The dry summer of 2022 resulted in insufficient water absorption by the soil, leading to delayed replenishment of groundwater reserves in spring 2023. In addition, the unusually sunny February followed by a relatively rainy March was not sufficient to compensate for the deficit.

Considering the likelihood of climate change intensifying this pattern in the future, it is crucial to adopt more prudent water practices. In this context, a recently published flyer provides guidance on reducing water consumption, enabling residents to navigate the summer season more sustainably.

The recommendations outlined in the flyer include:

  • Avoiding excessive lawn watering.
  • Watering garden plants in the morning or evening using rainwater whenever possible.
  • Using car washes or stations for vehicle cleaning instead of home-based washing.
  • Opting for public swimming pools rather than setting up private ones.
  • Showering instead of taking a bath.
  • Running washing machines and dishwashers only when they are fully loaded.
