No fewer than 44 out of 60 MPs ran for local office in the municipal elections on Sunday. And not a single one of them lost their bid. Fourteen of them will likely even be mayor of their respective home town for the next six years.
The party with by far the most people to be both MP and mayor is the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV). It currently looks as though they will have eight double mandates among their members.
One of them is Max Hengel from Wormeldange. The 46-year-old family man already filled the role of mayor from 2017 to 2020. Although the politician is now taking on two mandates, he believes that an end should be put to the practice. However, that can only be done with a wide political consensus, he argues.
Two MP-mayors failed to win their reelection bid on Sunday. For Jean-Paul Schaaf in Ettelbruck and Emile Eischer in Clervaux, their double function has come to an end. Former Tandel Mayor Aly Kaes meanwhile refrained from running again.
Both the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP) and the Democratic Party (DP) also have people with double mandates. For the LSAP, Dan Biancalana and Simone Asselborn-Bintz are running the muncipalities of Dudelange and Sanem, respectively. By the end of coalition talks, the DP might end up with three MP-mayors: Lydie Polfer in the capital, Carole Hartmann in Echternach, and André Bauler in Erpeldange-sur-Sûre.
