The local section of the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) unveiled its electoral programme for the upcoming municipal elections in Luxembourg City at Charly's Gare on Thursday.
The CSV list for the capital, led by Serge Wilmes, consists of 12 female and 15 male candidates. The CSV lead candidate for the legislative elections, Luc Frieden, was also present on Thursday. The party's objective is to "make Luxembourg City a place where people like to live and meet." While security took centre stage, discussions also encompassed housing, climate protection, and mobility.
Security was a major theme during the presentation, particularly in light of the rising number of incidents in the capital in recent years.
Serge Wilmes, head of the municipal list and outgoing first alderman, expressed concern, stating, "we witness and read about attacks and assaults in the municipal park. As the capital city, we have been urging the government for years to increase police presence. However, our requests have not been adequately addressed."
For this reason, the CSV is "committed to reintroducing a municipal police force within the police department itself." The party hopes that these new police will support municipalities and "enable local authorities to have the necessary means for police patrols on the ground and ensure heightened presence."
Addressing housing, the CSV aims to continue its efforts in developing affordable housing on city-owned land.
Wilmes pointed out that "the City of Luxembourg has already constructed numerous affordable housing units and will build hundreds, if not thousands, more in the coming years." The main project is currently Porte de Hollerich, but Wilmes stressed that it is essential to expedite the construction process. "Currently, it takes too long, and as more people move here, we risk stagnation," he warned.
In line with sustainability objectives, the CSV advocates for the construction of publicly owned buildings and housing with minimal energy consumption and reliance on renewable energy sources.
The local CSV section has set itself the goal of making the capital city climate neutral by 2040. This objective encompasses expanding the tram network and establishing safe pedestrian and cycling routes.
