On April 28, St George’s International School organised a new edition of the Beyond COP21 Symposium, where students learned about climate change and developed practical skills to take action.
Beyond COP21 Symposium was conceived in 2016 in Dubai as a day of interactive discussions around the climate negotiations in Paris. The event was founded by Peter Milne, founder & director of Target4Green an educational consultancy and training agency.
Currently the symposium has been held 34 times in 18 different countries. Peter Milner says about it: “The symposiums give young people the chance to work on local solutions to a global problem”
It was the first time that the event was held in Luxembourg and brought together more than 150 students from schools across the country. The workshops were held on the topics of upcycling clothing, producing films on sustainable topics and building pollinators from recycled materials. Students could also attend an interactive exhibition showcasing eleven companies and organisations in Luxembourg that promote sustainability.
Guest speakers included Filip Westerlund, CEO of Our Choice Fashion, a Luxembourg-based circular fashion brand and Dr Claudia Hitaj from the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development, who discussed what everyone can do to reduce their carbon footprint.
St George’s Sustainability Coordinator Anne-Marie McHugh commented on the event: “The Beyond COP21 symposium offers an opportunity for us to come together as a school community to build hope through sharing concerns and ideas to help support students on our journey in sustainability.”
The next symposium will be hosted by Chester Schools Together in the UK on 26 May.
