Couche-Tard, a Canadian convenience store chain, is taking over 60% of Total Energies petrol stations in Luxembourg and Belgium.

All French owned and operated Total petrol stations in Germany and the Netherlands were sold to Couche-Tard for a sum of €3.1 billion.

LCGB confirmed on its website that the change in ownership will not affect Total Energies' employees. In December, a collective agreement was reached for its 450 employees and signed until the end of 2024, the LCGB states.

The branding will remain unchanged for at least five years, Total says in a press release - at least for the period in which the refineries in Antwerp, Belgium and Leuna, Germany are supplying the stations. What happens after the five-year period is still unknown.

With the EU's ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2035, along with the Union's goal to become carbon neutral by 2050, the company will have to reshift focus: Total has said it would like to sell 30% less petrol by 2030 and focus on hydrogen and electromobility.

According to the Canadian newspaper ledevoir, Couche-Tard sees an opportunity to sell groceries at the petrol stations.
