More and more wild boar are being sighted near populated areas around the capital, especially Howald, Hesperange and Hamm, posing a real headache to residents and officials.
They cross walking paths, plow through gardens or live near playgrounds: Wild boar are getting comfortable being close to humans.
1,055 hectares of the capital - roughly 20% of the city's territory - is made up of forests, used by many residents for recreation. Joggers frequently come across boars on their morning runs.
"We have an overpopulation of wild boar," says hunter Jean Stein. "They have a lot of offspring and it's just getting worse."
"Hunting is practically impossible here, the police would be on our doorstep if we'd enter this area with a gun."
A resident told RTL that she called the commune about damage in her garden, who denied responsibility if she couldn't prove it was wild boar specifically that entered her property.
A local interest group is calling on the environment ministry as well as the nature and forest administration to come up with a plan, but so far, none have been drawn up.
