Minister for Mobility François Bausch also urged drivers to "always assume that something unexpected may occur on the road."

The fatal accident in Neudorf/Luxembourg City on Monday, which killed three people and seriously injured one, has highlighted various concerns about road safety, especially in urban areas. Bus stops in cities should not be obscured but clearly visible and placed right on the street, Minister for Mobility François Bausch clarified.

He explained that any other locations are not appropriate for bus stops "because when a lot of people get off the bus, of course, they tend to cross the street." Bus stops that are not directly on a road - i.e. ones that a placed adjacent to the road on a purpose-built stop - may be difficult for motorists to spot.

According to the Minister, better placement of bus stops would improve safety since cars would be forced to slow down behind a bus. It should be noted that, unlike in some other countries, overtaking a bus is not prohibited in Luxembourg.

Bausch advises drivers to remember that people coming off a bus frequently want to cross the street. Motorists should adjust their speed to different situations, especially in urban areas, according to the Minister.

Additionally, Bausch stresses that "I cannot emphasise enough that drivers must always assume that something unexpected may occur on the road." People behave "completely differently" in cities, and "as a motorist, you simply have to adapt to that."
