In 1944, the Nazis hoped the execution of the 23 Luxembourgers would act as a symbol to strike fear into the hearts of other resistance fighters and prevent them from taking further action.
At the time, 25 men were placed on the execution list, but two of the men were removed to other camps before the killing could take place. Two others on the list were taken from a hospital ward in order to be executed.
At least 321 people were executed in the Hinzert camp, according to official records. However, the witness accounts given by former prisoners suggest there were many more victims which have not been verified.
