The intervention is said to be related to the disappearance of a woman from Luxembourg, who has been missing since December.

31-year-old Lucia Alexandroae was last seen at the "McArthurGlen" outlet in Messancy, just a few kilometres from the Luxembourgish border. No other sightings have been reported since 6 December.

According to the Belgian news website Sudinfo, a police intervention in Sterpenich that started on Tuesday morning is linked to her disappearance. The intervention took place in front of and around her home, Belgian media reported. According to our colleagues from RTL 5 Minutes, an excavator was brought to the scene shortly after 12.30pm and started digging "behind the house."

Other reports allege that police have arrested Alexandroae's husband in connection with the case.

Investigators from Luxembourg and Romania joined the Belgian police in the investigation of the woods behind the house. Alexandroae's family claim that they were still in touch with her on 8 December and that she had left for Romania. They lost contact with her on 10 December, and she failed to show up for work on 9 January as planned.

The Belgian police will present their latest findings on Tuesday afternoon.
