Just as in 2021, the top five most popular baby names among residents of Luxembourg's larger communes shows a clear tendency towards short names.

In the municipalities of Luxembourg City, Esch-sur-Alzette, Differdange and Dudelange, the most popular name for girls in 2022 was Emma, followed by Mia in second place for a third year in a row. Mila rounded off the top 3, replacing Sofia in third position. Eva and Chloé made up the top 5 in 2021.

There is no clear winner amongst boys, but Liam, Gabriel and Noah were all equally popular for parents in the municipalities listed. This makes Gabriel a more popular name; last year it was in fifth place behind Leo, with Louis topping the list.

Luxembourg's first child of 2023 also has a short name in keeping with the trend: The wonderful Liv!

In accordance with Luxembourg law, all newborns must be registered at the municipality in which they were born. As the country's four maternity units are situated in the capital, Esch-sur-Alzette, and Ettelbruck, children are most likely to be registered in one of these municipalities. Of course, not all births take place in a maternity unit, hence other registrations.

Note: This statistic does not cover the entire country and is based on RTL reaching out to the communities of Esch, Differdange and Dudelange. The statistics agency usually shares more details on this topic in late spring. For last year's article, see here.
