Two films with links to Luxembourg have made the shortlist for the 2023 Oscars in the categories of 'International Feature Film' and 'Live Action Short'.
On Tuesday, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the shortlists for the 95th Annual Academy Awards.
While the shortlists will be narrowed down to a final selection of five for the official nominations on 24 January, there are currently two films with strong ties to Luxembourg that have made the first cut.
Marry Kreutzer's film Corsage featuring Luxembourgish actress Vicky Krieps has made the short list for the International Feature Film category. Krieps portrays Empress Elisabeth of Austria and was awarded the title of Best Actress at The European Film Awards and at The Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.
Corsage is represented under the Austrian flag, but the film was co-produced by the Luxembourgish production firm Samsa Film and includes other burgers in the credits such as Paul Biwer for special effects and Carlo Thoss for sound work.
La Valise Rouge (The Red Suitcase) directed by Cyrus Neshvad has also been shortlisted in the Live Action Short Film category. The story follows a young Iranian girl who arrives at the airport in Luxembourg and makes her way to the exit.
La Valise Rouge was produced by the Luxembourgish audiovisual production firm Cyne Films. The film is not only set and produced in the Grand Duchy, but director Neshvad is no stranger to Luxembourg, having previously won the Best Short Film at the 2021 Lëtzebuerger Filmpräis for his short film Portraitist.
The Academy is set to announce their final selection of five films on Tuesday 24 January.
