While the missions in Mali and Iraq are coming to an end in December, Luxembourg's army will participate in new NATO and EU missions next year.
The Defence Directorate has announced that the Luxembourg Armed Forces will participate in two new international missions in 2023, one operated by NATO in Romania, the other operated by the EU in Ukraine.
A rotation of 25 people will be posted to Romania for a duration of 28 months.
In the context of the 'European Assistance Mission Ukraine' (EUMAM), one person will be posted to Germany for a duration of two years. The Armed Forces will also join training exercises in Belgium. The respective Grand Ducal decrees are currently being compiled.
Thus far, Luxembourg has provided military equipment to Ukraine worth €75 million. This equals 16% of this year's defence budget. On Monday, Minister of Defence François Bausch announced that Luxembourg will send additional High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV) to Ukraine in support of the country's "right to self-defence".
The army's current missions in Mali and Iraq will come to an end in December.
