On Tuesday morning, the co-president of the Christian Social People's Party (CSV), Elisabeth Margue, was a guest on RTL Radio and stated that her party takes climate change "very seriously" and has "concrete policy proposals" on the issue.
However, Margue acknowledged that compared to the Green Party the opposition party has "very different positions on climate and environmental policy." According to the politician, who was only recently sworn in as a new MP, finding a "middle ground" is critical, and these issues should be tackled "pragmatically" and "involve both individuals and businesses. Margue said it should not be about imposing bans and instructing people what to do.
The CSV also pushes green policies in the municipalities where it is part of the municipal executive board, the party co-president stressed. Margue, a municipal councillor in the capital, refuted the accusation that the CSV – especially MP and Municipal Executive Board Member of Luxembourg City Laurent Mosar – criticises the Green Party in a polemical and populist manner. Tweeting about the Green Party is "neither populism nor a hate campaign," she argued, and political criticism "should be allowed." In addition, Margue remarked that it is not her responsibility to comment on Laurent Mosar's tweets.
Elisabeth Margue said that she would be willing to run in the municipal and legislative elections "if my party wants me to." However, she believes that the CSV "will only put together its lists for the legislative elections after the municipal elections" to evaluate how the various candidates fared in the June elections.
For the time being, it is not known whether the CSV list will have one or two top candidates for the legislative elections. According to information obtained by our colleagues from RTL.lu, a national lead candidate may be named, with each district having a different second top candidate Margue did not confirm or deny this information. According to the MP, housing, climate protection, tax justice, and the health system would be "interesting" topics for discussion.
