The Grand Ducal police have issued advice on protecting one's home against burglary in the cold, dark winter months.
As the clocks go back, the risk of burglaries will rise, warn the police, as break-ins are more likely due to fewer daylight hours. However, exercising preventative behaviours can help to deter would-be burglars.
The average burglary lasts between 5 and 10 minutes and can take place at any time, although it is more likely to occur at night.
Residents are advised to employ both mechanical and electronic security systems to secure their homes. Windows and doors should be closed and locked when the house is empty, although lights can be left on. Alarm systems should be activated even if you are leaving the house for a short period.
Holidaymakers departing for longer periods of time should inform their neighbours or the police of their planned absence.
In the event of a break-in, it is advised to not directly engage with the perpetrators. Instead, residents should call 113 immediately, and switch on lights or make noise to let the thief know they have been detected.
Drivers should also take steps to secure their cars, locking garages and removing valuables when leaving the vehicle on the street.
If you should see any suspicious activity or cars around the neighbourhood, you can alert the police on 113.
